SOC 110 - Sociology of Organizations & Institutions.
"The sociology of organizations essentially asks why organizations appear to behave irrationally.
Broadly speaking this field is broken up into two subfields: what is called macro-organizational
behavior, which is about the relationship between organizations and their external environments;
and micro-organizational behavior, which is about the internal design of organizations. We will
address both areas in this course.
Organizational sociology is a well-established field and students (and professors) encounter two
difficulties with it: (1) much of the theory is abstract and expressed in sometimes mathematically
formal style; and (2) especially in recent years, it has drifted intellectually toward business
school curricula and the questions that research in this field ask reflect the presumed concerns of
future business managers. Being a sociology course, we will adopt a more critical tone toward
organizations and apply theory toward more traditionally sociological concerns. The first few
weeks of the course will be front-loaded with theoretical readings, but the bulk of the course will
revolve around a handful of case studies which we will take our time with. It should be fun!"
Jada, det har ikke blitt spennende ennå. Men kanskje det store skjer etter teoridelen! Leser nærmere 150 sider i uken i dette faget. Tørre artikler til nå, men om to uker skal vi gå over til å lese bl.a "DISASTER - Hurricane Kathrina and the failure of Homeland Security", Og "Fast Food Nation...." Så det kan bli litt gøy!
Her har jeg en "take home tool kit", som er nå til helgen faktisk, en "reflection paper", en in-class mid-term og en take-home exam.
SOC 121 - Sociology of Innovation & Entrepreneurship
"This course addresses the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in the global integration and the development of nations, regions, and firms. Offering a global and sociological perspective, we shall review the phenomenal rates of worldwide expansion of innovation and entrepreneurship, comparing among different nations, different sectors, and different historic eras. We shall interpret such trends by considering the changing social definitions of innovation and entrepreneurship, their intersection with social inequality (for example, the global innovation divide and the role of gender), the components of national systems of innovation (for example, the regulatory regime and the Triple Helix of industry-university-government), and the impact of culture (for example, on innovativeness and through social networks). By combining an analysis of empirical data and of case studies with the reading of review articles and policy documents, class discussions will touch upon current debates on such issues as globalization, policy-making, and development strategies."
Veldig gøy, tro det eller ei! Er rundt 100 sider å lese hver uke + at vi må skrive en "reading commentaries", en slags problemstilling til det vi har lest, om ting som fikk oss til å lure på noe mens vi leste. Problem: hva skal jeg skrive når jeg ikke kommer på noe jeg lurer på.
Reading commentaries gir oss ett par plusspoeng, også er det to ta med hjem midt-terms. Og til eksamen får vi utdelt 10 spørsmål ca 2 uker før eksamen som vi kan pugge på, og til eksamen får vi tre av disse (!!). Thæhæ. Da må man sikkert skrive jæævli godt for å få bra karakter da. Meeeen jaja.
SOC 180I - Comparative Perspectives on U.S. and European Societies: Inequality
Professoren har seriøst skrevet en hel side om hva faget handler om, så jeg kopierer bare første avsnitt. Tror det holder.
"At the beginning of the 21st century it had become abundantly clear that North America, Western Europe, Australia, and Japan had developed enormously successful forms of modern capitalist societies: Immense wealth, extensive social security nets extending from birth to end of life, vastly expanded health care systems and increased life expectancy, an impressive edifice of education and research with unparalleled scientific advances across many fields, and a vibrant culture for creative and performing arts with books, music, dance, theater, and other art forms reaching larger segments of the population at lower cost and better quality than in any other time in history."
Joda, altså. Det varierer hvor fryktelig gøy det er mulig å få til, når vi leser nærmere 200 sider hver uke. Og vi må svare på et spørsmål, som alltid er meget underfundig formulert. Ajjaja. Vi MÅ ikke, forresten. Men å svare hver uke gir deg 40% A. Og det + å møte opp til timen gir deg en C på eksamen. Så hvis man da er i stand til å svare på eksamen, så er man jo ganske godt forberedt på en relativt god karakter.
Ellers er det to midt-eksamner. Take home mid-term. Åjada. Jeg har fem dager på meg å greier. Final Exam inneholder kun ting vi har lært de siste 4 ukene.

MAO: Det er masse å gjøre. Hele tiden. Ikke rart amerikanske studenter er utbrente når de er halvveis.
